At the end of 1980 Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton starred in an unabashedly feminist, pro-labor comedy so fun even Ronald Reagan liked it, mostly
Loved this piece, which filled in a lot of history I was unaware of. Having seen this in a Utah theater at the impressionable age of 13, I have to wonder if “9 to 5” didn’t sneakily shape an attitude or two of mine toward equal rights.
Looking forward to your take on “Cutter’s Way,” which I definitely did not see at 13, but finally did see for the first time a couple of months ago.
I only saw 9 to 5 within the last couple years and there were still a couple "whoa" moments for me, although some of that was the "Whoa, my mom liked this?" factor admittedly.
I think I saw this about 40 times when I was a kid. This was in the early days of HBO, when you could see this movie, followed by Friday the 13th, at 3:00pm.
Long time since I've seen this but I remember it stopping dead as entertainment after Lily Tomlin's elaborate Disney sequence, and being surprised that there is no redemption for the Dabney Coleman character - he's a baddie and that's that. Oh, and the theme song is superb but you don't need a new viewing to know that.
Great piece. Looks like *someone* poured himself a cup of ambition this morning.
