I could swear I started seeing ads for STRAYS an unusually long time ago - was there maybe a trailer before NOPE?

It's possible there were ads then in Summer 2022, but by the references on the wiki as of Feb 2022 it was already dated for Summer 2023. It was bumped, but that schedule move was announced in just May 2023 and the move was only from June to August.

I hadn't heard of it at all until I started seeing letterboxd follows giving it decently high ratings after press screenings, that plus learning it features Will Forte and a border terrier (I'm partial) put it firmly on the radar

That trailer was firmly in Alan Smithee territory. I'm amazed it turned out watchable. I love dogs and Will Ferrell both an inordinate amount, so I might have to give it a try, but I can't overstate how dire the trailer looked.

It sponsored the (incredible, wonderful, amazing) "The Lost Hans and Franz Movie" podcast episodes on Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend...in May.

Those were absolutely hilarious. Almost certainly funnier than if they’d actually made the movie!

The unintentional best bit was the increasing amount of cameos that, uh, "couldn't be used now." Down to the eventual reveal of the villain who I don't even know would be known by people of a certain age.

honestly surprised this got 3 stars

I'm curious how Blue Beetle will ultimately fare. Wonder Woman taught us that in a genre so adherent to a single formula, the little touches that add character go pretty far from separating the good from the great. Blue Beetle is twinned with The Flash, both by accounts here fairly good films especially by the standards of the genre. Yet of course The Flash couldn't outrun its star or the circumstances of the large DCEU.

Blue Beetle looks to be the polar opposite. I can't think of any actor with as much goodwill than Xolo Maridueña. At least the cast of the Flash could promote their film! It's one more cruel twist that the overlapping strikes will prevent Maridueña from working any sort of magic on behalf of his film. Truly a cursed scenario.

Maybe the film will have some legs at the box office, maybe it will find its niche on cable reruns. I don't think much more is possible.

Is this the first time you've had "[film title] [thematically related adverb verb] into theaters" or only the first time I've noticed.

STRAYS: Not a film I would have sought out on my own, but a harmless way to pass 93 minutes. The funny thing is I saw the red band trailer months ago (probably in front of COCAINE BEAR, which shares with it a go-for-broke attitude), but the version I saw the last few times I went out to the movies was the green band, which didn’t give the trailer cutters a whole lot of leeway.

I have a very niche and specific rage about a comic book film to express and it makes no sense to a normal person. But: THEY DID MY BOY OMAC DIRTY. EVER SINCE INFINITE CRISIS HE'S BEEN THE WHIPPING BOY. One of the better (and most appropriately niche concepts) takes was from Batman: Brave and the Bold. Not even an "omactivate" (or if they did I ran out briefly).

edit: also how do you shoehorn OMAC in and ignore Brother Eye? HOW COME CHIEF WILLOUGHBY!?

Grew up on Homeward Bound basically so when I saw Stray's trailer I was appealed, although I approach any "dog movie" very carefully. But this looks 70% fun and 30% cringe.
