With her eighth feature 'Showing Up,' Reichardt digs into the day-to-day pleasures (and hassles) of being an independent artist. She talked to us about her connection to the material.
Kinda makes me particularly happy that she had such a great Cannes jury experience! Finally caught up with FIRST COW recently and Reichardt really is one of the best filmmakers we’ve got right now.
Eight for eight, baby! She's definitely one of the best. And the new film is just so extraordinarily proportioned. Like the opposite of everything you see in theaters right now.
I only caught up w/ CERTAIN WOMEN at the beginning of the pandemic, but I think the last story in that is my favorite thing KR has done. Just GOAT level performances from K-Stew and especially Lily Freakin' Gladstone.
Reichardt seems to have found the sweet spot as an artist -- able to make the kinds of films she wants to make, with only as much pressure as she wants to put on herself. Finding joy in doing the work itself, as opposed to the outcome, is the big trick for anyone who wants to make a life in the arts. Especially so when the outcome can have a huge impact on one’s ability to spend time on the work. It’s like the ability to fly in the Hitchhiker’s books -- you have to learn to throw yourself at the floor and miss. She is an inspiration. I’m hoping I’ll have a chance to see this on a big screen near me.
Always excited for a new Kelly Reichardt. I will never not take the opportunity to say that Night Moves is criminally underseen and underappreciated. Jesse Eisenberg doesn't get enough credit for his subtle explorations of different shades of nerd rage.
I heard about this movie earlier this week from a New Yorker review that could be summarized as "*finally* a good movie from Kelly Reichardt". So within the span of 5 seconds I got to be super excited about a new KR film and once again horrified at the state of the New Yorker's film criticism. Scott, is there some kind of film critic licensing board we can report them to? Surely not appreciating Meek's Cutoff or First Cow or Certain Women merits at least an official reprimand, right? Points on your film critic license? Only allowed to sit in the last 2 rows at screenings for at least 6 months?

Sounds like you definitely need to watch OLD JOY!
You’re in for a journey. Only very good films from her.

Is she best living director who not have Best Director nomination? Even Spike Lee eventually got nomination.
If we’re just talking Americans I’d include Todd Haynes (though he did get a screenplay nom)
*Adolfas Mekas (brother of Jonas!)
Hmmm...I believe Emily Carr has long passed away. 🤔
Yep, in 1945. Although I now can't get the idea of a Reichardt biopic of Emily Carr out of my head, which I think would be an ideal match.

It opens at the Esquire very soon!
Good to know, thank you!

10 hours of Marvel movies (although they may prefer that, who knows)
