Great piece. I’ve been meaning to revisit these two for a while now. Cameron Mitchell did some good work for Mario Bava and others, but I believe his best performance is in RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND.
Wonderful writeup, Keith. THE SHOOTING is one of my favorite Westerns, if not my favorite. RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND is also very great. These are the films that introduced me to Monte Hellman, thanks to the Criterion Blu-ray. Excited to read your interview with him!
Really can't say enough good things about Criterion's release of these two. The movies themselves look as good as they can, but the bonus features are just exceptionally well-curated.
I’ve had the great good fortune to live and travel all over this great country, and I’ll cast my vote for southern Utah being the most beautiful part of it anytime I’m asked.
Kanab is also a stone’s throw from Colorado City, which is notorious for entirely different reasons.
I was very uneasy the one time I drove through Colorado City. The only vehicle I passed was a huge van driven by a woman in a pioneer dress and bonnet.
Great writeup! These are both on my list of need-to-see Westerns (and they get mentioned in film historian James D'Arc's excellent When Hollywood Came to Utah for those interested in learning more about the area.)

The interview is the work of a much younger writer. Keep that in mind.
THE SHOOTING is on Tubi is you're looking for it.

Very cool write up. Thank You!

Watched these both today (they're both on Max and Criterion Channel). Great stuff, wish I'd heard of them sooner!
