Any other Revealers on here attend True/False besides The Ploughman (who I've met the last couple of years)? If you love documentaries and have an easy path to the Midwest, I strongly recommend giving True/False a shot. It's extremely affordable, thoughtfully curated and scheduled, and full of unique touches, like the musicians who play before every screening. Plus, nearly *everybody* with a film in the festival turns up, so there's good Q&As, and there's enough time between screenings for good eats and conversation. I'm fortunate to go as a member of the press, but I'd still go even after retirement just because it's such a nice experience. (Plus, if we can wrangle more Revealers to the festival, we could expand our meet-up.)
I've been going off and on again since about 2007, but have been a regular goer since 2022. It's quite possibly the breeziest fest to attend. The Q system is by far the best way to catch a film without getting a ticket beforehand.
The Q system is one of the great things about the festival. I've been to a number of festivals, but never one that 1) sells out so many screenings yet 2) makes it possible for anyone to get into a specific screening they definitely want to catch. Unbelievably well-organized festival.
I was there! This was my 12th year attending, and fourth covering it for St. Louis Magazine! It’s a total delight and Columbia is the perfect size for it. I also appreciate as a great way to get a taste of all the really exciting stuff happening in the world of nonfiction film that otherwise wont get huge releases. I really dug Predators, Zodiac Killer Project, and WTO/99 from this year’s slate too!
Well, here I had almost a whole day advantage on you and yet you hit all the same highlights (plus one - I made a tactical error and missed entry to WTO/99 by exactly one spot). But seconded on everything you describe - the festival is a wonderful experience.
I've never been but I'd love to try next year. I've been to SXSW Film a couple of times and had a great time, and True/False always sounds even more interesting.
Really appreciate this coverage. WTO/99 sounds essential.

Nice, Max. Sorry I didn’t see you there this time.
All good! It’s so easy to wind up on completely different tracks over the course of the weekend. Hopefully I’ll catch you there next year!
A Revealer meetup at the festival would be great! Let's make it happen.
