Sam Mendes is such an odd case as a "name" director. He gets my attention and makes me interested in whatever film he's working on, but then I look at his IMDb and the gulf between his hits and his misses is soooooo wide. Sad to hear this wasn't one of the hits.
Sadder about The Whale, but I've been skeptical about that one for a while.
agreed, my big thing about the online whale discourse was “people shouldnt worry about fraser playing this role, they should worry about aaronofsky directing it.”
I haven't seen it yet, but based on Scott's review and your comment... oof... like seriously, it isn't as if Sam Mendes hasn't pandered to the Academy before
I even liked Noah...and I loved Mother!. Looks like he's working with Leto again in his next film, Adrift...now I'm afraid of that one, too. :( I hope he didn't peak with Black Swan...

"Aronofsky’s worst film to date"
"If only a different movie followed that opening scene"
this is the most disappointing review day since The Reveal launched
Empire of Light - while extremely pretty and well-acted - felt like a color-by-numbers Baby's First Pander to the Academy.

It feels like we're in a for a long awards season of comparisons between it and Fabelmans.
And the new Innaritu I guess but that one already seems to have disappeared from conversation.
Damn I didn't realize it had only a 44% on RT
It feels like a movie that would be better if made for a quarter of the budget and a fraction of the filmmaking muscle.
