Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott follow up 'Shiva Baby' with a rambunctious comedy and a documentary explores a thrilling moment in retro-psychedelic indie pop.
Elephant 6 is one of the few musical movements I can claim to be on the ground floor in experiencing. I spent a few years as a townie in Athens in the mid-'90s after graduating from UGA and I have a very strong memory of Henry Owings, Chunklet publisher and frequenter of Video Library, passing along a cassette dub of Olivia Tremor Control's "Dusk at Cubist's Castle," which of course blew my mind. I remember seeing OTC at the Shoebox, which was the tiny venue next to the more famous 40 Watt, and wound up seeing most of the major Elephant 6 outfits thereafter. Good times...
As much as I love Mangum and Neutral Milk Hotel, I feel the true gem of the Elephant 6 scene was Olivia Tremor Control. I got to see them perform in this tiny cafe for NXNW* with a bunch of their old friends (I remember Julian Koster alienating most of the early audience with his project The Music Tapes before he joined the action later), and to this day it remains one of my all-time favorite concert memories. Losing Bill Doss was such a bummer.
*Back when Portland was cool! I'm still waiting for someone to revive the concept, because "bands playing at a bunch of venues downtown" works so well there
Here's a link to my favorite Elephant 6 deep cut, "Duck Pond" by The Sixth Great Lake. It's more straightforward folk rock than most E6-associated releases and contains the unforgettable couplet "The geese know when to fly / they're the hip birds of the sky."
I hadn’t heard about the Elephant 6 doc but loved many of those bands (especially Olivia Tremor Control) and look forward to checking it out! Thanks

Forgot to mention that friend of The Reveal Jason Heller is interviewed in Elephant 6.
I rave about Shiva Baby at every opportunity. Can't wait to see the follow-up.
And now I've seen it! Great call on the likely origin of "PJ".
Sounds like Rock Ridge High School could use (dons sunglasses) a new sheriff.
