I had no idea Sean Baker had done anything before Tangerine. This definitely sounds like a Criterion release to grab.

He'd done a few before Tangerine. I haven't seen this one, but I really like his 2012 film Starlet, about the relationship between a sex worker and an 85yo woman.

I remember liking Starlet and being disappointed that the DVD of Prince of Broadway that my library had was without subtitles. With even my fairly minor hearing issues (too many years of metal shows without earplugs), that proved to be a deal breaker in terms of my enjoyment.

This appears to be on Kanopy, so I'll be sure to check it out and report back! Just saw Panic in Year Zero on DVD via interlibrary loan and thoroughly enjoyed it, definite addition to my list of films to watch for in Kino's frequent sales.

Any idea if this is coming to the Criterion Channel? I checked and it doesn't appear to be available there right now. I see that somebody mentioned it was on Kanopy, but I didn't see it there either.

it would be great if all new Criterion releases came to the channel, but right now there doesn't seem to be any pattern to me

I had never heard of this but it sounds amazing! It also sounds similar to early Ramin Bahrani films. I’m wondering how it compares to Man Push Cart in particular, which is stylistically and even content-wise similar and came out just a year later.
